Notes on the Nicholl/Nicholls family of Incumbents

There are variations on the spelling of this family surname throughout the Registers and causes much confusion.

In the front of the Parish Records 1701 Latin Register the date recorded for T. B Nicholl is 1868 - 1870, and it was thought he was the son of David Nicholls, whereas in fact he was David Nicholls’ grandson.

David Nicholls

David Nicholls was buried in 1844, aged 78.

Thomas Beynon Nicholl

T. B. Nicholl was baptized in 1843. T. B. Nicholl’s father was William Thomas Nicholl (who appears from time to time as an Officiating Minister, but was a Rector. elsewhere).

Thomas Beynon Nicholl had 9 children, though one seems to have died by the time of the 1881 Census. One of his children, Charles Bowen Nicholl, became a Rector and was at Clayhidon, Devon for many years. C. B. Nicholl was also a teacher and Head Master of King’s School, Grantham from 1910 to 1917. He and his brother David Wilmot Nicholl played rugby for Wales (and Llanelli) - CBN 15 times between 1891 and 1896 and DWN just once in 1894.

William Thomas Nicholl

William Thomas Nicholl was the Rector of Llanfihangel Cilfargan [in some sources Cilvargen or Llanfihangelfach] from 1838 to 1872. He was Curate before that at Llanfihangel Aberbythych.

In more recent years the parish of Llanfihangel Cilfargen was absorbed into the parish of Llangathen. On modern O.S. maps it is just shown as “Cilfargen” and no church is shown – the reason being that the church been sold (St Davids Diocese Yearbook 2009-2010).

William Thomas Nicholl had 10 children, all baptized at Llanegwad and his wife died at the age of 45.

John Brunker, in Brunker’s Llanegwad, made an error he thought T. B Nicholl was (1868-1870), was the son of David Nicholls, whereas in fact he was David Nicholls’ grandson.
