About Llanegwad

Llanegwad is a rural parish with bus services along the A40 Carmarthen - Llanelli road, which is the major artery through the parish. Other local services are being established but for all practical purposes are currently of little use. When visiting the area a car is essential (along with an umbrella and Wellington boots!) The rainfall in West Wales is high, with mild, damp winters, the prevailing wind being from the west. This part of Carmarthenshire (Dyfed) is renowned for its scenery, ranging from the Towy Valley with its rich agricultural land to the surrounding hills and pine forests.

Few small local shops remain in the parish and a visit to Carmarthen is necessary for even basic items. The sub-Post Office does sell a few items along with newspapers while the High Noon Garage at Whitemill, about a mile and a half westwards towards Carmarthen, supplies a wider range of groceries, dairy goods, frozen food and a selection of other products. Adjacent to the High Noon is a motor dealer specialising in 4- wheel drive vehicles.

The main occupation is sheep and dairy/cattle farming, on small family-owned farms. Established businesses include the Felingwm PotterySyd Davies Tractors and a company producing timber-frame homes from a factory in Station Road, Nantgaredig. Traditional public houses can be found throughout the locality.

The restaurant at the Four Seasons, Cwmtwrch, Nantgaredig closed in January 2005, but the Four Seasons Health and Leisure Club offers excellent facilities for healthy living. Also to be found at Cwmtwrch is a Hair and Beauty salon which holds a five star rating by the Good Salon Guide. The salon is run by Elaine Edwards Creative Hair Team which also has a salon at 24 Blue Street, Carmarthen (01267 236138)

Many cottage industries have sprung up in recent years and it is said that there are more self-employed in Wales than anywhere else in the United Kingdom. One reason for this is that wages generally are low so second and third incomes are a necessity.

The area has lagged behind the rest of the UK for many years as far as IT is concerned but Broadband finally arrived Felingwm on 26th May 2005. Children in local schools are brought up with computers so the attitude to "new technology" is changing rapidly. The 21st century has arrived in Llanegwad.

A search of the Parish Registers shows much inter-marriage in the last century. It is only within the present generation that women have left behind the traditional role of 'farmer's wife' for the freedom of independent employment away from the family farm.

Visitors to the area have increased with the opening of the nearby National Botanic Garden at Middleton Hall and the restored gardens at Aberglasney, which featured in a television series.
