Llanfynydd

Grid Ref: SN 5615 2399

Located above the confluence of the rivers Sannan and Diwlas.

In 1579 William John Gwilym Ievan ap Rhydderch of Llanfynydd, gent., sold the messuage of Tir Aber Sannan and Sannan Mill to John Llewelyn Gove. Afterwards it became part of the Aberglasney estate, and in 1605 Sir William Thomas formerly of Aberglasney, sold Abersannan, Tir Abersannan, Melin Abersannan and other properties to Anthony Rudd, Bishop of St David’s.

Within a short time John Newsham settled there, a family with business connections with Carmarthen. Thomas Newsham lived at Abersannan in 1620 and was Town Sheriff in 1662 and Mayor in 1678; he was succeeded by his son John Newsham, attorney, who was Town Sheriff in 1692 and Mayor in 1708.

Another Thomas Newsham, Town Sheriff in 1730 and Mayor in 1737, was disenfranchised during the civic troubles in 1749. Not long afterwards the Newshams left Abersannan.

In the 19th century it was bought by the Jones family, bankers (Pantglas) and in 1838 the tenant was the Revd. David Harries, vicar of Llanfynydd.
