The Daniel family of Alltyferin            Back to the history of the mansion

Alltyferin and the Governess

In 1878/9 18-year-old Louisa Kultschar (Culture) was employed as a governess at Alltyferin mansion, home of the Bath family. She became pregnant by Charles Lambert Bath and the family shipped her to the Islington workhouse in London where she gave birth to a son whom she named Charles.

Thereafter, she was employed as a domestic in the London home of Charles Lambert Bath’s sister Janet and her husband Frederick Milford.

The boy, Charles William Kultschar was returned to Llanegwad and was raised by David and Mariah Jones at their home called Rose Hill. Another child some 9 years older, Sarah Anne Marandez was also raised there under like circumstances. Sarah Anne had found life rather hard going and showed up on their doorstep one day, and stayed for the rest of her life. (Rose Hill is still standing and is a white cottage close to the new graveyard.)

Charles Kultschar was sent away to public school by the Baths and upon completion of his studies was given the job of coachman at Alltyferin. He lived above the stables and eventually took as his wife, though they apparently didn’t marry, Elizabeth Davies, daughter of John Davies, the bailiff. The Davies lived in Pontargothi and there were three sisters: Elizabeth, Hanna and Fanny.

Sarah Anne Marandez is buried in the old graveyard with Anne Jones of Rose Hill. Anne was a dressmaker. Her sister Jayne was bedridden. Her parent’s names were Maria and David and it is believed her brother’s name was Thomas.

Footnote

Charles Lambert Bath shot himself at the Metropole Hotel in Brighton in 1899 at the age of 41, whilst suffering from depression.

Charles Kultschar’s descendants are now trying to piece together the rest of the story and further information would be appreciated. A family tree can be found on Michel Edward Bath’s excellent website at Bath Family Genealogy
