Newquay harbour

The Harbour at Newquay

This is a very picturesque coastal town which was once a bustling shipbuilding centre and fishing port. Newquay is built on steep terraced slopes which fall to a crescent-shaped beach of sand. The harbour is sheltered and provides a safe haven for a myriad of pleasure craft and the few remaining fishing boats.

In the 18th century smuggling was rife as the secluded coves along the coast provided ideal hiding places for contraband.

Newquay was once the home of Dylan Thomas and is believed to be the town on which he based Llareggub in Under Milkwood.

Visit the Ceredigion Museum in Newquay for more information on the town’s past or the Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Centre for information on the dolphins, seals and sea birds which frequent Cardigan Bay and the Irish Sea.

Coastal footpaths offer superb views and good walking.

Newquay’s narrow streets have many gift shops, bars and cafes that cater for all tastes. There's also plenty of hotels and B&Bs to choose from in the town itself and the surrounding area.

Parking is a problem in the holiday season and it can get quite crowded. The car park at the top of the hill, a few hundred yards from the beaches, has toilet facilities.

Other toilets can be found near the harbour.
