Around Carmarthenshire
Llansawel
The village is located in the Cothi valley, an area with abundant grazing for sheep and dairy cattle. The river Marlais runs through Llansawel and joins the river Cothi (a notable salmon river), midway between Penny Farm and Island Farm, two miles to the east.
Every year there is a Raft Race on the Cothi over the five-mile stretch between Edwinsford Bridge and the Black Lion at Abergorlech. Raft designs can be innovative and numerous “sinkings” take place but the crews take it all in good heart and enjoy the proceedings as much as, if not more than, the spectators.
From the small village of Llansawel roads lead to Llandovery, Lampeter, Llandeilo, Llanybydder and the County town of Carmarthen.
In days gone by the convergence of four roads at the village made it a favourite a market place where sheep and cattle changed hands before continuing their journey to the larger markets such as those in Hereford and Kent.
In the 21st century the community spirit continues, and many charity events throughout the year generate considerable amounts of money to worthy causes.
Places of Worship
St Sawyl's Church (Christian - Anglican Church in Wales)
The church can be found behind the old courthouse in the centre of the village. It has a restored square stone tower.
Shiloh Chapel
The Chapel stands at the Western edge of the village, where the roads from Llanybydder and Carmarthen meet. It is a well known landmark in the area because if its upstanding design and prominent position.
Bethel Chapel
This chapel stands directly opposite the cemetery on Esgairdawe hill road (Trehelig). Its interior is beautifully panelled in timber.
