Carreg Cennen Castle
Carmarthenshire

The ruins of the castle stand proud on a precipitous limestone crag overlooking the remote Black Mountain in the western corner of the Brecon Beacons National Park.
Damaged over the centuries by warring forces and the elements, the ruins have a haunting atmosphere and sense of the past which is missing in better preserved sites.
The present structure dates from around 1300 but its earlier origins are lost in the mists of time. It changed hands between the English and Welsh in the medieval period, but its fate was sealed in 1462 when it was partially dismantled by 500 men with crowbars and picks. This must have been a daunting prospect.
There is only one way up, a steep, grassy hill protected by a complicated system of defences. Approach from the other direction was impossible as the edifice sits on the edge of a 300 ft sheer drop.
A passageway cut beneath the fortifications leads to a cave which may have been occupied in prehistoric times.
