Kidwelly Castle
Carmarthenshire

Sitting on a steep bluff, overlooking the River Gwendraeth, is more complete than many of its contemporaries.
The Gatehouse is of massive proportions and once through it a series of concentric walls and towers protects the central core.
Started by the Normans in 1106 as an earth and timber stronghold to protect their interests in south-west Wales it formed a link in a chain with other castles along the coast. Standing on a prominent ridge it commands the surrounding countryside and at one time would have had access to the sea.
In this early form it was vulnerable to Welsh attack and was rebuilt in stone during the 1270s in the from that we see it today. The castle's Great Gatehouse was completed in 1422. Over the following centuries other changes took place and the castle gradually assumed a domestic role with the additions of Hall, Kitchen and Lodgings in the Tudor period.
