Raglan Castle
Monmouthshire

The finest late-medieval fortress in the British Isles probably on the site of an earlier Norman castle.
The influential Sir William ap Thomas started building the castle in 1435 and raised the Great Tower. His son William Herbert continued in the same lavish style and the result was a sumptuous palace with formal State apartments and a Great Gatehouse.
Raglan endured one of the longest sieges of the Civil War, proving that it was not an easy target.
The Hexagonal Tower and other features are typical of architecture found in northern France.
