Coed y Garth
Llanfynydd
Grid Ref: SN 561 260
On the banks of the Sannan in a narrow vale. No trace of the house now remains, as its stones were carted away to build Penylan House.
W. G. Davies of Penylan owned Coed y garth in 1796. About 1839 a farmer when ploughing discovered part of the floor of the old plas.
The first-known owner, ‘Sir’ Harry Ddu, descended from Elystan Glodrudd, and according to local tradition, owned a horse with a phenomenal turn of speed. On one occasion while over the border in Glamorgan, as he started his homeward ride he filled his tobacco pipe, lit up, then galloped westwards, and when he arrived at Coed y garth he had not finished the smoke!
The horse became proverbial, and if a place was difficult of access or far away, people said ‘Sir Harry's horse would have done it,’ and when any animal moved quickly ‘it went like Sir Harry’s horse.’ His name was Harry David Lloyd, and died at Coed y garth, circa 1630. His son John Harries alias John Harry David esquire succeeded to the estate, and was High Sheriff in 1640. He died in November 1682, aged 80. His eldest son Henry Harries who had taken over Coed y garth during his father’s lifetime, was assessed at 6 hearths in 1670, and Anne Harries at 5 hearths.
Harry inherited lands from his mother as well, and when he died unmarried in 1677 during his father’s lifetime, he left his freeholds to Richard Thomas of Ystrad near Carmarthen. Henry’s younger sister Janet was the ultimate heiress of her father, and so got Coed y garth. She married John Thomas Griffith, husbandman, of Pencarreg, described in 1683 as ‘of Coed y garth, gent.’ After this Coed y garth and its estate was acquired by William George Davies, Esq., of nearby Penylan. Among the properties was Melin Coed y Garth on the river Sannan about 14 miles south-east of Penylan.
