In this illustrated biography we accompany Mary Jane Hughes on a journey that takes her from the South Wales industrial town of Llanelli to train as a nurse in Stroud and Gloucester, through her First World War service in Bristol, Egypt and the east coast of Africa, and her return to work, and then retirement, in her home-town. The illustrations are drawn from Jane’s unparalleled single collection of photographs and her memorabilia that are now housed in the Carmarthenshire County Museum at Abergwili and Parc Howard Museum, Llanelli.
A short, informal review by a member of the writers' circle:
I greatly enjoyed With a Camera in my Pocket. It's informative and entertaining and has a depth of interest. It doesn't shrink from the horrors of war but doesn't dwell on them either. Excellent balance, I thought, and many of the details are so telling. The pictures do add a great deal, but the text is strong too. And at the heart of it, the story is of real general interest (or you've made it that way). Sometimes local history comes up a bit short on interest and rests heavily on its local connections, but this story would be of interest anywhere. Nice job of production too!
