Around Pembrokeshire

Tenby

Tenby Harbour

Tenby harbour

A very pretty and harbour town and seaside resort, popular with all ages. The town lies near the start the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path which offers good walking and fantastic views of Caldey Island.

Located on a hilltop Tenby started its existence as a Welsh stronghold, later replaced by a Norman Castle and walled town. Parts of the walls survive and form an attractive feature enclosing the old town.

From early on in 19th century the town became a popular destination for both English and Welsh holidaymakers.

Numerous B&Bs and hotels, both in the town itself and on the outskirts, cater for the visitor and although there are many caravan parks on the periphery they do not spoil Tenby’s beauty.

Some of the streets are cobbled and the visitor has the choice of dozens of restaurants, gift shops and pubs from which to choose.

From the harbour there are boat trips to Caldy Island and cruises along the coat to see the wildlife.

For the golf lover there’s Tenby Golf Club, the oldest golf club in Wales, being founded in 1888.

Sandy beaches to the north, south and west of the town are great for children, and other attractions can be found in the town and surrounding area to keep all ages entertained.

Car parking in the town is difficult in the holiday season at the best of times and although there are other parking facilities a short distance away these also tend to be full and the walk up the hill to the town may not suit everyone.

There are toilet facilities opposite the town’s multi-storey car park

Other attractions

A late 15th century Tudor Merchant’s Town House, dating from the time when Tenby was a busy port trading across the Bristol Channel to Ireland and Europe.

The town walls are not complete but are impressive examples of 15th century craftsmanship, They mark the town’s original boundaries and were used as fortifications against the Welsh rebellion.

At nearby Caldey Island you can see the Monastery and the island’s wildlife.

The Museum & Art Gallery can be found in part of the remains of the Castle and boasts several spacious galleries, research facilities and a gift shop. The area around the museum offers spectacular views of the beaches and Caldey Island.
