Llanegwad Sampler

Seen on Ebay in early January 2008

"This auction is for a wonderful sampler signed Joice Davies, aged 9 years Llanegwad 1833; measures 6.5" by 8 3.75" (not including frame)"

The Sampler was advertised as In good condition, with inevitable very slight fading of original colour. The seller thought the frame was original with a 2.25 inch wide pine and solid wood backing closed with square nails that do not look to have been ever removed.

The verse reads:

"WHEN OUR HATRED IS VILOENT,

IT SINKS US EVEN BENEATH THOSE WE HATE."

When last looked at, just before the auction closed, bidding had reached US$316. Postage was an additional $26.

The Sampler was being sold from Perryville, Kentucky, United States and the reserve had not been met, although there was plenty of bidding, sadly none from the UK.

Carmarthen Museum lists a sampler from Llanegwad amongst its items, but it is not on display.
