River Towy Freezes Over
.jpg)
In the last two months of 2010 the UK had snow - not unusual you might think, but the quantity was. Scotland and the north of England was particularly hard hit early on and later the east of England and the south east were under up to a foot of snow. Most airports were closed for several days and holiday-makers flying off for a Christmas in sunny climes faced delays and sleepover on airport concourses.
In Wales, the north Wales had heavy snow first but Carmarthenshire had its fair share too. Although temperatures of -10 degrees were not uncommon, the main A and B roads were kept clear for most of the time. A snowfall in the weeks leading up to Christmas caused schools to close. Shopping was disrupted for a while but the crowds soon returned and shopping became even more manic than normal.
Christmas 2010 was a white one, but on December 28th it warmed up and rain fell - within two days almost all snow had disappeared.
These photos, taken at The Quay in Carmarthen, show a partly frozen River Towy as the ice was melting.
